The Science Illustration Certificate Program is offered through the University of California Extension, Santa Cruz. Applications are now being accepted for Fall 2008. The deadline is March 15, 2008.

Please note that the deadline for Fall 2009 will be Jan 31, 2009.

Admission Requirements
Admission to the program is limited to 15 students and is by application only. The application deadline for Fall 2008 is March 15. Applicants must have at least a bachelor's degree, preferably in a science, and must be able to demonstrate a strong background in representational drawing, as well as a developed sense of aesthetics. Other degrees are eligible if the portfolio exhibits keen observational skills and if the applicant can demonstrate a strong interest in and understanding of science.

Fees and Expenses
For the 2008–09 academic year, tuition is estimated to be $21,500 plus mandatory health insurance of approximately $1,900. After a deposit of $500, tuition can be paid in quarterly installments. Students may waive the health insurance requirement if they can demonstrate they have the approved level of personal insurance. Books and supply costs are estimated at $2,500. Personal living expenses in Santa Cruz can range anywhere from $7,000 to $13,000 for the nine-month academic year.

Financial Assistance
Through a special arrangement with Citibank called CitiAssist™ Loans and Wells Fargo Education Advancement PrivateSM Loans, UCSC Extension offers financial assistance to individuals enrolled in our professional certificate programs. Additional loan programs may also be available. You can obtain a loan application from UCSC Extension’s Student Services Department (831) 427-6687, or you can apply online by visiting Citibank’s Web site at http://www.studentloan.com/schools/ucsc-ext. Upon approval, Citibank will send loan funds to UCSC Extension and you will be notified by phone or e-mail. Application Fee
Your application must be accompanied by a non-refundable $50 application fee. Make check payable to UC Regents, University of California. Deadline for Fall 2008 applications is March 15, 2008. Initial review can begin after this date but applications will be accepted until the class is full.

E-Mail Address
Be sure to provide an e-mail address on page one of your application for an active account that you plan to check regularly. This e-mail address will be used to advise you of the status of your application and for most other communication.

Official Transcripts
Please list every college attended on your application form. Include one official transcript from the Registrar of each institution attended (including university correspondence or extension divisions), or a statement of good standing if work was not completed. Transcripts may be sent directly to the program office or directly to you if the institution allows. Each transcript should be in an envelope sealed and signed by the Registrar.

Letters of Recommendation
We require three letters of recommendation. Please provide each reference with a copy of the Recommendation Form (Adobe Reader required). Professors or others who are in a position to analyze your abilities and academic promise in your chosen field of study should prepare letters of recommendation. References must use our form but may attach a letter on their own letterhead. They can mail the letters directly to the program office or to you in a sealed and signed envelope, which you in turn forward to us along with your application.

Statement of Purpose
This should be a concise, well-written essay about your background and your reasons for pursuing graduate study in science illustration. Selection committees place particular importance on the statement of purpose.

Portfolio
A portfolio submission is required and should consist of high quality prints, color photocopies, or photographs of ten to twenty representational pieces of your artwork. Slides are accepted but not preferred. Traditional black-and-white or color media, digital illustration and three-dimensional work will all be considered. Each example should be labeled with a title, medium used, and date of completion. The collection should be bound in a folder no larger than 9" x 12" or light binder clearly labeled with the applicant’s name, address, telephone number, and e-mail address. If you wish to submit electronic pieces, please include a hard copy print in the portfolio as well. Please do not send original artwork. We will not return portfolios unless specifically requested and unless a postage paid return envelope is provided. When reviewing the portfolio portion of the application, the selection committee looks for attention to detail, accuracy, and aesthetics, as well as presentation of materials.

Graduate Record Examination (GRE) score is not required, but if you wish to provide scores and/or official reports we welcome them.

International Students
Applicants from countries where English is not the primary language must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). A minimum score on the paper-based TOEFL of 550, or 220 on the computer-based test, is required for admission (http://www.toefl.org/). All official academic records must be issued in the original language and accompanied by English translations prepared by the issuing institution. If translations are not available from the institution itself, translations may be prepared by government or official translators.

Reactivating an Application
Applicants have the option of reactivating an application from last year. Please contact the program office for information and permission. A written reactivation request, submitted via email or U.S. Postal Service along with a non-refundable, application reactivation fee of $50 is required. Please make checks payable to UC Regents, University of California.
