Summer Session Classes
UCSC Summer Session 2008 Science Illustration Courses
During the summer a select number of science illustration classes are offered for full academic credit to interested individuals and to all levels of experience. In previous years Field Sketching, Color Illustration, Introduction to Science Illustration, Botanical Illustration and Science Illustration Using Flash have been offered on a rotating basis. Summer 2008 we plan to offer Introduction to Natural Science Illustration and a new class, Marine Science Illustration.
Introduction to Natural Science Illustration (5units) #71715, SCIC 106A-01 Summer Session 1: June 23-July 25 / Tue Thu (1:00 p.m.-4:45p.m.)
Introduction to graphite, pen and ink, coquille, and scratchboard, along with training in essential skills for creating accurate and dynamic scientific illustrations. Attention to the demands of the printing process along with basics of proportion, perspective, and composition. Appropriate for students with a demonstrated interest in science illustration through previous course work in science and art, or through extracurricular activity in the field, or a strong desire to learn the skills of the field.
Explore traditional techniques including scratchboard, coquille, pen & ink on film. An overview of the field of science illustration will all be offered. All levels of experience are welcome. The location for this class is 1101 Pacific Ave located in downtown Santa Cruz (General Ed: A)

Marine Science Illustration (5 units) #71716, SCIC 126-01 Summer Session 1: June 23- July 25 / Tue Thu (9:0a.m. – 12:30p.m.)
Explores science illustration relating to marine subjects and their environment, using watercolor and mixed-media techniques. Current illustration styles and conventions are covered, emphasizing making marine science accessible to everyone. No prior art or science experience necessary.
All levels welcome. The location for this class is 1101 Pacific Ave located in downtown Santa Cruz. (General Ed: A)
